Syracuse Community Health Celebrates Match Day as First Ambulatory Family Medicine Residency Program in Onondaga County
ACGME Ambulatory Family Medicine Residency Program Set to Launch in July 2025, Welcomes First Class of Four Residents
Syracuse, NY – Syracuse Community Health is proud to announce that it has been granted accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to establish a Family Medicine Residency Program. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the organization’s commitment to providing high-quality, community-centered healthcare and training the next generation of traditional family physicians.
This achievement represents a historic moment for Syracuse Community Health in the continued growth, reflecting the ongoing commitment to not only providing exceptional care but also fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals. As a teaching health center, Syracuse Community Health will have the ability to provide high-quality care while supporting the education and development of future healthcare leaders who will have an impact on the community for years to come.
A residency program is a critical phase of medical training for newly graduated doctors, providing them with hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of seasoned physicians. This program will prepare residents to deliver comprehensive primary care, with an emphasis on preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and patient-centered care in a medically underserved community.
Beginning in July 2025, Syracuse Community Health will welcome its inaugural class of four Family Medicine residents. These residents come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, bringing a wealth of experience and perspectives that will enhance patient care and foster a deeper connection with the community. Their presence will not only strengthen the healthcare workforce but also improve access to quality medical care for individuals and families throughout the region.
“Earning ACGME accreditation for our Family Medicine Residency Program is a momentous achievement for Syracuse Community Health and for the greater Syracuse community,” said Dr. Ofrona Reid, CEO and DIO at Syracuse Community Health. “This program will not only provide critical training for future family physicians but also ensure that our patients receive high-quality, compassionate care from a team dedicated to serving their needs.”
Today also marks an exciting milestone as Syracuse Community Health has successfully participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match Day, selecting four residents who will begin their training in the summer of 2025. This first class of residents will be an invaluable asset to the organization, contributing to its mission of delivering comprehensive and culturally competent healthcare to all patients, regardless of background or socioeconomic status.
Syracuse Community Health looks forward to the positive impact this residency program will have on both its patients and the broader medical community. By investing in medical education and training, the organization is reinforcing its commitment to improving health outcomes and fostering the next generation of compassionate, skilled family medicine physicians.
